Our Story

Since its establishment in 1970, Sunnynook Medical Centre has been at the heart of the Sunnynook community, conveniently located opposite the Sunnynook Shopping Complex. Surrounded by complementary services such as a pharmacy, physiotherapy clinic, and dental practice, we offer a seamless healthcare experience for our patients.

We take pride in delivering a comprehensive range of medical services in a friendly, professional, and confidential environment. Whether you need minor surgical procedures, expert women's health services, or skin care treatments, our team is here to support your health and well-being.

 

Led by Dr. Rekha Nadakkavukaran, who took over the practice in 2018, Sunnynook Medical Centre is committed to providing personalized and high-quality care to every patient. Our diverse, multilingual team ensures we cater to the needs of a wide range of patients, creating a welcoming space for all.

Meet the Team

Dr Rekha Nadakkavukaran

Director/Principal GP

Dr Rekha has over 17 years of experience in general practice, with a background spanning paediatrics, geriatrics, and adult medicine in hospital settings. She enjoys building ongoing relationships with her patients and has a particular interest in women’s health and skin cancer care, including minor skin surgery. One of her most rewarding experiences was recognising subtle changes in a patient and referring them for a brain scan, which revealed a treatable tumour - a reminder of the value of careful listening and thorough care. Outside of work, Dr Rekha enjoys sewing, going for walks, and spending time with her family.

Sheenal Prasad

Practice Nurse

Sheenal completed her Bachelor of Nursing in Fiji and worked there for five years before moving to New Zealand, gaining experience in both primary health and aged care. She joined Sunnynook Medical Centre recently and enjoys being part of such a supportive, collaborative team. Inspired by caring for her grandparents, Sheenal is passionate about providing compassionate care, treating patients with dignity, and building meaningful relationships. She believes every day brings a chance to learn something new in practice, which makes her work both rewarding and meaningful. Outside of nursing, Sheenal enjoys gardening, cooking, and being involved in her community and faith.

Marinda du Buisson

Practice Manager

Marinda has been with the clinic since mid-2023 and brings a strong sense of care and calm to her role. She values the close-knit, supportive team environment and is especially skilled in conflict resolution and team wellbeing. Outside of work, Marinda teaches ballet and coaches netball—she’s even choreographed a school production. Motto: “Treat people like you would want to be treated.”

Anita Indrisie

Receptionist

Anita has been part of the team since 2023 and enjoys working close to home where she can build lasting connections with the community. Known for her wit and emotional intelligence, she’s often the first to ease tension and smooth over personality clashes. She’s well-travelled, loves a good op shop find, and is happiest solving a crossword or behind a camera. Anita is also proud to have supported her parents through later life. Motto: “No you’ve got—yes you can get.”

Stephanie Smart

Receptionist

Stephanie joined the practice in 2022 and loves being a welcoming face for patients. She takes pride in offering hospitality and supporting people through complex situations, always aiming to make their experience positive and smooth. Her favourite part of the role is being a bridge between patients and clinical staff, and she enjoys learning more about the healthcare space each day. In her downtime, she enjoys gardening, reading, and time with family. Motto: “A little kindness goes a long way.”

Ailun Guan

Health Improvement Practitioner

Ailun joined the practice in 2024 after completing her student placement here during her Master of Applied Social Work at Massey University. She brings experience working with survivors of family and sexual harm, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and homeless wāhine and children. She’s passionate about creating non-judgmental, supportive spaces where people feel safe, heard, and understood. With a background in early childhood education, Ailun combines empathy with practical care. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, dancing, singing, and sharing meals with friends. Motto: “Let it be.”

Traci West

Health Coach (PHO)

Traci began working at Comprehensive Care in April 2024 after completing her health coach training. She’s driven by a desire to help people feel better about themselves and proud to support patients from all walks of life. Her approach is centred on listening, encouragement, and celebrating progress—big or small. A standout moment for her was supporting a patient who went from struggling to take a few steps to walking regularly with confidence. Outside of work, Traci enjoys time with family, walking, and watching movies. Motto: “Remember to give yourself the same grace and space you give others.”

Dr Ittymathew Nadakkavukaran

Gastroenterologist and Medical Specialist

Dr Itty is a specialist in gastroenterology and endoscopy with over 20 years of experience. He completed his medical degree in India in 1990, gained New Zealand registration in 2000, and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2011. His career has taken him across New Zealand and Australia, including work in Invercargill and Perth before joining North Shore Hospital (WDHB) in 2012. He is actively involved in the bowel screening programme and has a particular interest in endoscopic gastroenterology, colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease, especially Crohn’s disease. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Itty is passionate about education, teaching medical students and overseeing the training of new Fellows. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing badminton and spending time with his wife and two adult children.
